Scripture Passage: “Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.”  Psalms 33:8

Dear Friends,

Several months ago I dealt with a young lady who was responsible for scheduling the itinerary for a bike tour.  The tour group was going to be staying in our family life center for one night and we were working out the details for their arrival and departure.  I could tell the young lady was very intelligent and a great organizer, but she had the habit of saying “awesome” in response to everything I said.  To many people in our culture today this is not a problem, but to me, it is a bad habit and drives me crazy. I got off the phone and had an awesome conversation, with my awesome staff, about our awesome church, and awesome facilities, and how we were going to have an awesome time with this awesome group of bike riders.  My staff’s response was to look at me with wonderment in their eyes, and frustration in their voices as they instructed me to go back to my southern Appalachian dialect.  My attempt to speak “like” my young counterpart was nipped in the bud and I returned to being the fifty-six year old man I actually am.

A few years back Rich Mullins wrote a song entitled, “Our God is an Awesome God.”  The words to this chorus are sang, over and over again repeating the words, Our God is an awesome God, He reigns from Heaven above, with wisdom power and love, Our God is an awesome God.  How can you find the adjectives to properly describe the King of glory? Just when you think you have it figured out and have listed every positive adjective known to man, one word keeps coming to the top – AWESOME.  There is really nothing else to compare Him to because there is none other like Him.  Sometimes I worry that we have lost our sense of awe and wonderment of Him because circumstances and trials of life have clouded our perception.  Satan’s job has always been to call into question the goodness and love of God, but even he knows the awesomeness of God and trembles in His presence.

The day of this writing it is snowing outside and is absolutely beautiful.  We are in the second full week of March and have seen it go from being sunny and in the low 80’s, to rain and flooding, to chilly and snowing.  When scientist say certain things cannot happen anymore because of global warming, our God manifest himself and shows them He can do anything He chooses, whenever He chooses, and in any way He chooses.  The sense of awe I am experiencing today is based upon the fact that God knows my name and loves me.  The same God who controls the weather is the same God that controls the events of my life and has the power to take care of me regardless of what comes.  I think that is AWESOME.

In Christ,
